What is PD Insurance and why do I need it?

What is MTC Insurance and why do I need it?

MTC provides coverage for the trucking company/owner-operator for liability that they might incur against a customer’s cargo while in their care, custody, and control. It protects against financial loss due to damaged or lost cargo. This coverage protects while in transit, loading, or unloading; and while at a terminal/dock awaiting final distribution. These covered events consist of natural disasters, vehicle accidents, cargo abandonment, customs rejection, acts of war, and piracy. The trucking company/owner-operator sets the value of the cargo that they are hauling on a per-load basis and for catastrophic events on a per-occurrence basis since there can be multiple loads at a terminal overnight. This is why often the limits will be displayed as such $100,000 / veh $200,000 occ/ $200,000 cat. Common exclusions are Govt. Action, Nuclear hazard, War, and Military. Common items not covered: Accounts, bills, deeds, money, currency, diamonds, precious stones, animals, tobacco, alcohol, and art. It is not available on garbage trucks, limos, hearses, buses, passenger vans, or ice cream trucks.

What is NTL Insurance and why do I need it?

NTL provides a leased owner-operator with limited liability protection for property damage or bodily injury to a third party. NTL protects owner/operators from liability in accidents when using your semi-truck for personal use. Examples: grocery shopping, going to the movies, or out for dinner. NTL insurance never applies when an owner-operator pulls a loaded trailer, operates on behalf of a trucking company, or uses a vehicle for any revenue-generating purpose. Any personal use between your return and the next dispatch points will be covered under NTL.  Running errands before driving home after dropping your load may not be covered by NTL. In that case, the courts have determined that the motor carrier owes you a ride home in your tractor, so your motor carrier’s coverage may cover the accident. Trips that involve you taking your semi-truck to a garage for servicing may also not be covered. In this particular scenario, the motor carrier may be responsible if you were fulfilling the maintenance terms of your independent contractor agreement.

OAI coverage is designed for independent contractors who want to protect themselves at work. It provides an affordable source of indemnification for work accident injuries. It covers benefits for Accidental Death & Dismemberment, Accident Medical, and Accident Disability Income. Independent owner-operators are the holders of these types of since they are not covered under a corporate workers’ comp policy. OAI provides a cash benefit for an injury or you die as a result of a covered accident. It provides supplemental benefits for lost wages, medical expenses, and death benefits. It is an optional piece of coverage and usually costs significantly less than a workers’ compensation package. It is a relevant option for independent truck drivers as part of the overall truck insurance program. You can choose the deductible, disability coverage, and limits you want to buy. Coverage usually provides no legal expenses, so understand that you're assuming financial risk.

What is Trucker's General Liability Insurance Insurance and why do I need it?

  3. The actions of a driver while representing the insured and on the premises of others, such as loading docks and truck stops
